Agritourism operators and regional event organisers have a prime opportunity to secure funding for their initiatives, with the Cook Government opening applications for the 2026-27 Regional Events Scheme (RES). A total funding pool of up to $1 million is available to support the development of new and emerging events across regional Western Australia.
Key Details of the Funding Scheme
The annual program provides grants ranging from $5,000 to $40,000 for events held between 1 July 2026 and 30 June 2027. The scheme’s primary objectives are to attract visitors to regional areas, encourage them to disperse throughout the region, and stimulate local economies—goals that directly align with the strategic interests of the agritourism sector.
Crucially, the funding also includes a dedicated $150,000 stream for the Regional Aboriginal Events Scheme (RAES). This sub-program is specifically for events that showcase and celebrate Aboriginal activities and experiences, offering a valuable opportunity for operators involved in cultural tourism.
The application window is now open and will close on 19 September 2025.
Strategic Opportunities for WAAA Members
This grant scheme presents a direct, actionable opportunity for WAAA members. Operators can apply for funding to launch a new on-farm festival, a long-table lunch series celebrating local produce, or an educational event that showcases their agricultural practices. Partnering with other local businesses or community groups to create a larger regional event could also strengthen an application.
The program has a strong track record of supporting successful events that drive tourism, such as the Gascoyne Food Festival, the York Festival, and the Karijini Experience. These events create a compelling reason for tourists to visit a region, providing a significant boost to accommodation providers, tour operators, and other local businesses.
Tourism Minister Reece Whitby emphasised the importance of these events for regional economies.
“The Regional Events Scheme and the Regional Aboriginal Events Scheme are so important, as they support a year-round calendar of events and encourage visitors to explore more of what WA has to offer,” he said. “Regional events bring communities together, boost local economies, and support local jobs, all while showcasing the very best of our State.”
Regional Development Minister Stephen Dawson added, “From food festivals to celebrations of Indigenous culture, these events showcase the best of what regional WA has to offer.”
