In an Australian-first, the Cook Government has launched a dedicated $2 million grant scheme to support the establishment and growth of farmers’ markets across Western Australia. The program offers individual grants of up to $50,000, providing a significant financial boost for one of the most vital direct-to-consumer platforms for the state’s agricultural producers and a cornerstone of the agritourism experience.

Direct Funding for Infrastructure and Business Development

The Farmers’ Market Grant Scheme is a two-stage program designed to enhance the operational and commercial viability of both new and existing markets. The first stage provides operators with access to a fully funded one-day training course, developed and delivered by the Western Australian Farmers’ Markets Association, aimed at improving business sustainability. Following this, operators can apply for grants of up to $50,000 to invest in critical areas such as infrastructure, marketing and communications, planning and compliance, and overall market development.

This funding directly addresses the operational challenges many market committees and operators face. For an existing market, this could mean upgrading stalls, improving signage, or investing in a targeted digital marketing campaign to attract more visitors. For a community group planning a new market, the grant could be pivotal in covering the initial costs of planning, compliance, and foundational infrastructure.

Strengthening the Producer-to-Consumer Connection

The government’s initiative acknowledges the critical role that farmers’ markets play in the broader agrifood ecosystem. In the official announcement, Agriculture and Food Minister Jackie Jarvis highlighted this connection, stating, “Farmers’ markets play a valuable role in our communities, providing a platform for farmers and specialty food and beverage producers to showcase their produce, while allowing customers to have direct access to fresh produce and local products from the producers themselves.” This direct engagement is not only a key sales channel for producers but also forms the basis of an authentic visitor experience, making markets a significant driver of local and regional tourism.

A Strategic Investment in the Agrifood Sector

The new grant scheme is positioned as part of the government’s broader investment in the state’s value-added food and beverage industry, complementing programs like the Value Add Investment Grants and the Buy West Eat Best initiative. By strengthening the farmers’ market sector, the government aims to create more opportunities for producers to connect with consumers, test new products, and build resilient, diversified businesses. The Minister added, “I’m excited to see this scheme help our local farmers’ markets and provide more opportunities for producers, and more opportunities for Western Australians to enjoy fantastic produce and products grown or made here in WA.”

WAAA members who operate farmers’ markets, or individual producers who are key stallholders, are strongly encouraged to investigate this funding opportunity.
