The first-ever international agritourism tour of the Southern Hemisphere recently wrapped up in Western Australia, and it was a resounding success. But what does this mean for you, the agritourism operator on the ground here in WA? It’s simple: new ideas, valuable connections, and a glimpse into the future of our industry.

WAAA President Leads the Way in Groundbreaking Agritourism Tour

Spearheaded by WAAA members John and Linda Stanley of Chestnut Brae in Nannup, in conjunction with NAPMA (North American Farm Direct Marketing Association) this tour brought together 50 delegates from the UK, USA, and Canada to explore the unique offerings of WA’s agritourism scene.

Steal-Worthy Ideas from Across the Globe

The tour wasn’t just a sightseeing trip; it was a deep dive into innovative practices. Delegates were looking for “new ideas” that they could adapt and implement in their own businesses, focusing on marketing, packaging, and promotion. From truffle farming to unique regional experiences, WA’s agritourism operators showcased the best of what we have to offer.

Why Networking Matters

One of the biggest takeaways from the tour was the importance of networking and peer-to-peer learning. The smaller group setting allowed for more “one-on-one time” with farmers, fostering connections that can lead to new collaborations and ideas.

“networking and that connectivity; sometimes that’s the most important piece of what an individual takes back.” – Suzi Spahr, NAFDMA Executive Director

Sometimes a simple chat over a beer at the end of a long day is all it takes to spark a game-changing idea!

WA’s Secret Weapon: Storytelling and Indigenous Tourism

Our state has a unique advantage: a rich history and vibrant Indigenous culture. Delegates were blown away by the storytelling abilities of Australian operators, noting that they could “listen to them talk all day long.” And the innovative approaches of Indigenous tourism operators, who attract visitors even in remote areas, offered valuable lessons in marketing and attracting new audiences.
