WorkSafe Upgrades Free WHS Training Platform for Young Employees

The WA Government’s WorkSafe division has launched an upgraded version of its SmartMove online training platform, a free Work Health and Safety (WHS) resource designed for new and young workers aged 15 to 24. The update aims to reduce injury rates among this demographic, which accounts for one in eight work-related injuries and over 27,000 lost workdays annually in Western Australia. Government data indicates 12 workers in this age group suffered fatal injuries over the past five years.

Operational Implications for Agritourism

For agritourism operators, the upgraded platform serves as a supplemental tool for meeting WHS compliance and induction obligations, particularly for seasonal or inexperienced staff. Integrating this free, government-endorsed resource into onboarding procedures can help demonstrate due diligence in safety management and potentially reduce the frequency of incidents that lead to lost productivity, operational disruptions, and workers’ compensation claims.

The platform provides a structured foundation in general safety principles, which can streamline in-house training by allowing managers to focus on site-specific risks and procedures. Given the high rate of staff turnover and seasonal employment common in the sector, a standardised and accessible online tool can create a consistent baseline of safety knowledge across the workforce.

Platform Features and Content

The SmartMove platform is structured to provide foundational and specialised WHS education. Its core components are now delivered through an upgraded interface intended to improve accessibility and user engagement. The platform recorded 339,396 visitors in the 2024–25 financial year.

Key training components include:

  • A general module covering fundamental WHS laws, common hazard identification, and harm prevention strategies.
  • 17 industry-specific modules that allow users to access training tailored to different work environments. Operators should review these modules for relevance to specific farm activities.
  • Alternative learning courses designed for individuals with physical, medical, or other disabilities.
  • On-demand information sessions covering specific topics such as sun safety, hazardous waste handling, and workplace bullying.

The resource is available at no cost and can be integrated into existing employee induction programs.
