Regional communities and agritourism operators are set to benefit from a new round of State Government funding aimed at bringing high-quality performing arts to regional and remote Western Australia. The Regional Performing Arts funding program is now open, offering grants of up to $150,000 to support both the creation of new regional works and the touring of existing WA productions.
Understanding the Two Funding Streams
The program, delivered through the Regional Arts and Cultural Investment Program, is designed to enhance the cultural vibrancy of regional towns, which in turn boosts their appeal as tourism destinations. There are two categories available for applicants:
1. Made in WA: This stream supports the development of new performing arts works that are created in and for the regions, ensuring content is relevant and responsive to local audiences.
2. Playing WA: This stream funds the touring of professionally produced WA shows to regional and remote communities, giving residents access to the same calibre of performances available in Perth.
Impact on Regional Tourism and Agritourism
While agritourism operators may not be direct applicants, this program is highly relevant as it directly addresses the WAAA priority of strengthening regional communities. A vibrant arts and culture scene is a key driver of tourism, attracting visitors who then require accommodation, food, and other local experiences that WAAA members provide.
The success of the recent tour of ’21 Hearts’ by Theatre 180, which sold out six of its seven regional performances and reached over 2,300 people, demonstrates the strong demand for such experiences. This activity creates a powerful incentive for people to travel to and stay in regional towns.
Regional Development Minister Stephen Dawson highlighted this flow-on effect.
“Through this funding from the Cook Government, we can bring productions of this calibre to the regions. This not only enriches community life, it also supports regional venues, hospitality and tourism operators, creating a positive flow-on effect across the whole region,” he said.
Creative Industries Minister Simone McGurk added that the program ensures equitable access to the arts.
“Through the Regional Performing Arts fund, the Cook Government is making sure that high-quality productions like this one reach audiences right across our State – not just in Perth,” she stated.
By fostering a richer cultural landscape, this funding helps to make regional WA a more attractive destination overall, indirectly supporting every tourism business in the vicinity of a tour or event.
