The State Government has opened Round 8 of its highly successful Regional Economic Development (RED) Grants program, representing one of the most direct and significant funding opportunities for agritourism operators seeking to expand or diversify their enterprises. With grants of up to $150,000 available for projects in the South West, this program is a critical tool for driving on-farm innovation and building business resilience.

Announced on 24 October 2025, the grants are designed to support locally-driven projects that create sustainable jobs, expand industry capabilities, and attract new investment to the regions. Since its inception in 2018, the RED Grants program has invested over $40 million into more than 400 projects, proving its effectiveness in fostering regional economic growth.

What the Funding Covers for Your Business

For WAAA members, the RED Grants program is strategically aligned with core agritourism objectives. The funding can be applied to a wide range of capital expenditure and business development initiatives, including the construction of new visitor accommodation, the establishment of value-adding food production facilities, or the launch of innovative tourism experiences.

The program’s criteria specifically target projects that:

  • Contribute to sustainable jobs
  • Expand or diversify industry
  • Develop skills or capability
  • Increase business productivity
  • Attract new investment

These objectives are directly in line with the goals of many agritourism businesses looking to scale their operations and enhance their market position.

South West Minister Don Punch emphasised the program’s focus on local enterprise.

“The RED Grants program is about backing local people with bold ideas,” he said.

“We’ve seen firsthand how this support helps bring regional projects to life – strengthening communities and driving real outcomes across the South West.”

Actionable Insights for Applicants

The government’s announcement highlights a previous recipient in Gelorup that received $100,000 to establish a music studio and accommodation facility. This example underscores the program’s willingness to fund projects that blend infrastructure with unique visitor experiences, a model that fits well within the agritourism sector.

Operators considering an application should focus on demonstrating a clear business case with measurable outcomes, particularly around job creation and economic impact. A strong application will articulate how the project diversifies the local economy and contributes to the region’s broader appeal as a tourism destination.

Collie-Preston MLA Jodie Hanns reinforced this point, stating,

“When local businesses thrive, so do our communities – through new jobs, stronger investment, and a more diverse economy.”

Application Deadline and Resources

Applications for Round 8 of the RED Grants program close on 9 January 2026. Given the competitive nature of the fund, prospective applicants are advised to begin their planning and proposal development as early as possible. For detailed guidelines, information on upcoming workshops, and to access the application portal, operators should visit the South West Development Commission’s website.
