WA SMEs Offered up to $50k for Innovation Commercialisation

The Western Australian Government has opened applications for its Innovation Booster Grant (IBG) program, making up to $50,000 available to eligible small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to help commercialise new products, services, or business models. The program is designed to bridge the gap between initial concept and market readiness. Applications for the current round close at 11:00 AM AWST on Thursday, 11 April 2024.

Strategic Implications for Agritourism Operators

This grant provides a direct capital injection opportunity for agritourism businesses seeking to innovate beyond standard offerings. For an operator, these funds could be used to de-risk the development of new revenue streams or enhance operational efficiency. Practical applications include funding the development of a proprietary online booking platform, the commercialisation of a new value-added food product manufactured on-site, or securing intellectual property rights for a unique farm experience model. The grant focuses specifically on commercialisation, meaning activities must have a clear path to generating revenue or creating market-ready assets.

Grant Details and Co-Contribution Requirements

The Innovation Booster Grant provides funding for up to 80 percent of eligible project costs, capped at $50,000. This requires a minimum 20 percent cash co-contribution from the applicant business. For a project to receive the maximum $50,000 grant, the business would need to contribute $12,500, for a total project value of $62,500.

A distinct 50:50 co-contribution rate applies to businesses based in regional Western Australia. To be eligible, applicants must be a WA-based SME or startup with a valid Australian Business Number (ABN).

Eligible Activities and Application Process

The grant is administered by the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation (JTSI). Funds are designated for specific commercialisation-focused activities. Eligible uses include:

  • Research and development
  • Product development
  • Technology transfer and intellectual property
  • Commercialisation support services

Interested businesses must submit their applications through the official government portal. Full program guidelines, eligibility criteria, and the application link are available at https://www.wa.gov.au/government/publications/innovation-booster-grant-2026-application-information . All applications must be received before the 11 April deadline.
